In Ahmedabad city, 200,000 dogs live on the streets and they have not been vaccinated against rabies; every day 35 to 45 street dogs die because of rabies. Human hospitals don't have enough anti-rabies vaccines and private hospitals have the vaccine but the cost is too much for the majority of the population.
ASHA has started an anti-rabies project and give the vaccine, as well as wormers, to the street dogs. They aim to re-vaccinate each area each year so that the immunity is maintained. Volunteers and vet students help with this project. There is currently no cattle vaccination program and so a lot of cattle and buffalo also suffer from rabies.
